Interview by Dr Marina Nani
A multi-award winning Film Maker, Holistic Specialist and Thought Leader Gulrukh Khan is also an upcoming author, a public speaker, Compère, and Chair for the London and U.K. arm of one of the largest international women’s forums in the world.
Gulrukh, you are a multi-award winning Film Maker, Holistic Specialist, Public Speaker and Events Organiser. You also chair the London arm of one of the largest women’s forums in the world. Which such a rich career, can you tell us about your professional background and why you chose the path you are on?
In the 90’s I decided to do some extensive travelling around Asia and South East Asia. I remember standing on a beach in Thailand, as the sun was setting, and receiving a strong message in my heart that I was to follow the family lineage and professionally assist people to heal.
My grandfather was an esteemed Holistic Practitioner of Unani or Ancient Greek Medicine. He had many influential patients including the president of India so it seemed inevitable that I should carry this lineage forward.
I was also very keen to make films, as I found that they were a complete vehicle to incorporate all the interests that I had. So, during this year and a half long travels, I got the opportunity to work for one of the top Advertising Production Companies in Bombay and learned hands-on video production.
So after returning to London from Asia, I put together some ‘arty’ short films with the material I had filmed on High8. After 4 years, or so, I went on to script, direct and produce my own independent documentaries, which covered areas that deeply resonated with me.
My motivations in facilitating others to operate from their highest levels and to heal is self-explanatory. My motivations in making films is driven by the knowledge that film is an important all round medium, and can spread its message internationally to potentially millions of people.
You are passionate about your work, what drives your vision?
Conceptual ‘facts’ called life and infinity drive me further to explore areas that expand human consciousness. It is very important for me to feel that I am growing and discovering the wealth of internal gifts that we all possess. It’s a whole universe within. We focus so much on the external that we forget we are mini multiverses.
What is the closest cause to your heart?
I am a passionate human rights and animal rights activist and campaigner. Also an avid environmentalist. Its hard for me to differentiate between any of these areas, they are all one and the same thing. I have a deep love affair with cetaceans and would love to swim alongside a whale one day.
What current projects are you working on?
The completion of my docu-feature on the Bosnian Pyramids (the oldest and largest in the world), a book with Robert Watts (Producer of the original Star Wars and Indiana Jones film series), a conference on Institutional sexual harassment where we seek to facilitate policy change. And of course Wintrade Week.
What is your vision for an enhanced world? What needs to happen?
I envision a world where we all have equal rights, as well as full access to a high standard of living, which becomes the norm. Financial redistribution of wealth is key to this, though we live in a world of hierarchy and oppression currently. We need people to wake up and realise that we are all brothers and sisters. It may sound cliched, but its the truth.
What are the 3 key steps you took which could inspire other people to change their lives for the better and ultimately our collective world?
I learned to listen to my inner voice and not be lead by the conditioned thinking of the masses. I learned to follow my own heart – regarding the work I have chosen to do in my life. I have learned to appreciate every moment and to move onwards – despite the challenges life presents.
What do adults have to practically do to inspire younger generations?
We have to learn to truly listen to them and to adapt to their way of thinking. We may as well make it a happy future.. and that means keeping them happy and supported! We also need to recognise the future operates through them. By not supporting them, we are not supporting healthy evolution.
Who most inspires you?
I would say my parents – who were first-generation immigrants to London. Just watching how they have changed and adapted themselves throughout the decades, without sacrificing their own native culture, is deeply inspiring. I have learned a lot from them and am grateful that because of them I can speak my native language ‘urdu’ to compliment my life. And of course my mother is the best cook in the world for me. (I have been spoilt).
Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
Travelling the world and continuing the work I do – but maybe doing more of it from warm beaches!

There is a myth that women are expert networkers, but leave without the contract. WINTRADE will bust this myth and demonstrate that women don’t need the boys clubs to do business, but are just as effective whenever the opportunity shows up.
The convention will also discuss success stories, best practices and key challenges and solutions that face Women Entrepreneurs in a globalized world.
The Convention will stand to motivate, inspire and encourage boldness, ambition and leadership. WINTRADE (Women In Trade), is a network that serves to bridge that gap, break down barriers and give ease of access between women entrepreneurs globally to facilitate the development of small and new businesses.
This is where you will be able to solidify friendships, network and contract with like-minded women business leaders to transform ideas to action.
For this third meeting, entrepreneurs from across the world have expressed their desire to join the ecosystem of women entrepreneurs, which is considered one of the fastest growing business sectors in the world.
