Telling her side of the story: Brittany Kaiser

After The Great Hack, back from hiding out in Thailand, scared, Brittany Kaiser is telling her side of the story. on stage at the Web Summit in Lisbon

If you watched ‘The Great Hack” on Netflix, perhaps you have a long list of unanswered questions. The good news is that Brittany Kaiser is to take the stage this November at the Web Summit. The star of the Netflix series, former Business Development Head of Cambridge Analytica and whistle-blower, can Brittany Kaiser help us find some of the answers?

According to a recent press release issued by Web Summit, “Kaiser is set to address data weaponisation and privacy to over 70,000 attendees in Lisbon from November 4-7. As someone who witnessed how data could be weaponised first-hand to influence and manipulate people, she will be speaking on the Deep Tech track about what could be done to combat such dangers to democracy. She will also be on the conference’s Future Societies panel with a fellow academic, David Chaum from Elixxir, to discuss the impact of tech on privacy and the possible solutions to the privacy problem from their own perspectives.”

Privately educated, Kaiser helped to run Barack Obama’s first Facebook page as an intern for his 2008 campaign.

When she landed her first job with Amnesty International, she became aware that people joining this organisation are not motivated by big fat pay slips and are prepared to work for free. If Kaiser was an “idealistic young professional working on her fourth degree in human rights law and international relations”, why did she join Cambridge Analytica, a political consulting firm funded by billionaire Robert Mercer (Donald Trump’s patron) ?

Did her experience inside Cambridge Analytica, help her understand the advantages of working in an unregulated industry or made her part of an elite with no respect for privacy and democracy?

Her book Targeted -My Inside Story of Cambridge Analytica and How Trump, Brexit and Facebook Broke Democracy, is an explosive memoir revealing to the public “the disturbing truth about the multi-billion-dollar data industry, how companies are getting richer using our personal information and exposing how Cambridge Analytica exploited weaknesses in privacy laws to help elect Donald Trump. ”

Other speakers recently announced for this year’s event include the former UK Prime Minister, Tony Blair; son of Will Smith and founder of JUST Water, Jaden Smith; Guo Ping, Rotating Chairman of Huawei; and football legend, Eric Cantona.

We really hope to see you in Lisbon! Let’s share notes!
