Keeping Your Employees Safe

When you’re a workplace leader, it’s up to you to ensure that you are keeping everyone and everything in your business as safe as possible. Workplace safety issues can be found in any field but if you are working in a particularly precarious industry, you’ll have to take more precautions than most. Even so, working in an office doesn’t mean that you won’t face specific workplace health and safety issues.

The essential thing is making your employees as aware of safety as you are. You need to ensure that you are following through with your employees to keep them safe, too. Training sessions and showing your staff what the risks are is the first piece of the puzzle. Promoting workplace safety programmes will help you to lower the number of incidents and accidents in the place. You can also give your staff a more positive outlook that you look after their welfare. So, how can you keep your employees safe?

Define the responsibilities in the workplace.

You may have gone through fire risk assessment training, but have you nominated someone to be in charge in case there is a fire? You need to define the responsibilities that each level of your organisation has and this should include policies and goals as well as plans for safety culture.

Measure your safety policies.

You need to create an effective safety culture, and that can only be done when you are measuring incident rates properly. Make sure that your workplace safety checklist of actions is proactive and regularly checked for effectiveness. You need to know that your safety plans are in place, but you also need to know that they work and that requires regular checking.

Train your employees.

The only true way that your employees are going to feel safe is if they have had effective training. Every single one of your employees should be well trained in each area of safety of your business. When you do this, you give your employees the chance to feel confident about their wellbeing in your business.

Make everyone accountable.

Your health and safety processes should ensure that everyone is responsible for their part in keeping the business safe. This should be emphasised among your leadership and management teams, too, so that you are not the only person leading the charge.

Consider the hierarchy.

You need to ensure that all leaders and managers are held responsible for their own teams. If you have a safety hierarchy in the office, you’re going to be able to tell your employees where to turn when there is a problem. This prevents all issues being laid at your feet.

Encourage a reporting culture.

Your employees should know and understand the significance of reporting all issues, first aid procedures and even something as simple as a cut finger. All health and safety issues should be reported as soon as possible so that you can keep up with them.

Safety is important when it comes to keeping your employees safe, so start now and you’ll have everything in place for a happy and healthy workplace.
